Hallux rigidus is evaluated with a thorough physical examination and x-rays.  Conservative treatment begins with orthotics with appropriate modifications as well as oral or injection therapy.  If conservative treatment fails, there are surgical options such as cheilectomy, first MPJ arthrodesis, and first MPJ implants.
